It is generally recommended that you avoid certain foods while wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances. These foods include hard foods, sticky foods, and sugary foods. Dr. Donald W Linck II has provided the following information to help you keep your braces intact and functioning properly.
Certain hard foods can damage or break your braces, forcing you to visit our office for repairs. Some hard foods you should consider avoiding include:
- Raw carrots and apples
- Stiff bread crusts, rolls, bagels, or pizza crust
- Potato chips
- Corn on the cob
- Tortilla chips or hard taco shells
Sticky foods can be trapped in the orthodontic appliances in your mouth and cause tooth decay. Because they are sticky, they are difficult to remove, even using floss or a pick. Examples of such sticky foods include:
Even if they are not sticky, sugary foods and drinks should be avoided while you wear braces. Sugar can cause decay and a variety of other dental problems in your teeth. Our orthodontist recommends that you avoid sugary foods, and that you only rarely drink sugary beverages. Some of the sugary things to avoid are:
- Ice cream
- Sweet tea
